IN INNELLAN
It was great to see so many young children being active and having fun last week on the tennis courts at Innellan Bowling and Tennis Club. The weeks course, organised by Lindsay Mitchell of 'Active Schools' was part of a national initiative to provide more opportunities for children to take part in sport and physical activity and to 'develop effective pathways between schools and sports clubs in local communities'. Sixteen children from Innellan and Toward took part, led by Lindsay, Stephen Collins and Cameron Wilson with the assistance of some volunteer helpers from the tennis section of the club. The success of the week could be judged by the enthusiasm of the children as they arrived each day and immersed themselves in games designed to promote physical activity, hand-to-eye co-ordination, controlled movement and racquet skills a far cry from the finger and thumb skills most often used in todays digital world! Thanks must go to South Cowal Community Council whose grant helped the club replace one of the court perimeter fences, buy some appropriate equipment, and offer discounted junior membership. Liz Gower. 'MEG HENRY' TOURNAMENT For many years, Meg Henry was a leading light in the tennis section of Innellan Bowling and Tennis Club, organising tournaments and helping youngsters learn how to play tennis. The Meg Henry Memorial Rosebowl, donated to the club by her family after her death in 2018, was presented to the two winners of the 'Meg Henry' tournament, held on Saturday, 30 July. The winners were Stevie Limbert from Castle Tennis Club and Margaret Lauder from Innellan who were presented with the Rosebowl by Megs husband, Tom. Cash prizes were donated by Fynewood of Dunoon. The runners-up were Cathy Capewell of Toward and Helen Waddell from Castle Tennis Club. A really great afternoon was had by all, topped with an excellent afternoon tea in the bowling pavilion. ACTIVE SCHOOLS JUNIOR TENNIS ACTIVITY WEEK - 25 - 29 JULY The tennis section are linking up with 'Active Schools' to run a 5 day tennis activities course for children aged 8-11years. The dates are 25th to 29th July, 10-11.30am. The entries are looking very promising and it is hoped that the week goes well. Well done to Liz and Elaine for getting this organised. TENNIS SCOTLAND ACTIVITY DAY The tennis section had a very successful day on Tues 21st of June with Anna Myatt from Tennis Scotland and Lindsay Mitchell from Active Schools. With the help of Lindsay, we had 28 pupils from Innellan Primary and 12 from Toward visit the Club. Anna began the day with a morning of tennis activity ideas for the seven adults/volunteers who were interested in encouraging more children to play tennis. Anna is a highly skilled tennis coach so she was able to give us some wonderful ideas on how to keep the children interested and active. The school children came along in the afternoon and Anna led the tennis sessions with them with the other adults lending a hand. All the children appeared to thoroughly enjoy themselves - as did the adults! So, a big thanks again to Anna and to Lindsay for leading a splendid day. The tennis section, along with Lindsay, are hoping to offer tennis activity sessions over the school holidays. ACTIVE SCHOOLS JUNIOR TENNIS ACTIVITY WEEK The tennis section are linking up with 'Active Schools' to run a 5 day tennis activities course for children aged 8-11years. The dates are 25th to 29th July, 10-11.30am. Lindsay Mitchell of Active Schools, has been very helpful in offering advice re providing this safely and constructively. She, with fellow Active Schools workers, will assist the tennis section provide the activities course. Lindsay has also offered to put the tennis members through for their Disclosures, under the auspices of Active Schools, which the members were pleased to accept. The information letter and consent forms have been sent out to parents via the local primary schools and ourselves. Children who are non members will be charged £15 for the activity course. This will include junior membership for the rest of the year. Any parent of a child on the course can join the Club at a special rate of £30 from the 1st of August till the end of the season. GAME SET & MATCH On the Courts this last weekend, one of the oldest chicken-wire fences was removed and replaced with a smart new v-mesh fence, bought with donations by some of the members themselves and a Grant kindly awarded by the South Cowal Community Council from the Burnamakiman Hydro Scheme. This huge job was kindly undertaken by Fynewood of Dunoon to whom the Club owes a massive 'thank-you'. OPENING DAY The Club held its opening Ceremony on Saturday 23 April.
