INNELLAN BOWLING AND
TENNIS CLUB 2017 Archive Bowling Section PRESENTATION OF PRIZES & GET TOGETHER IN CLUBHOUSE The Club held its Presentation get together on Saturday 14 October in the Clubhouse, attended by a good turnout of members. Vice President Tommy McDonagh
officiated and he & Secretary Myra Campbell presented
the prizes to the lucky winners. He spoke to the disappointing year Innellan had experienced, due to lost games, emergency works to the clubhouse and the wet weather which had had a catastrophic effect on most of us this summer. Tommy then announced the Most Improved Bowler this season and Bill Thom was surprised to find himself the chosen one. Congratulations to Bill. Hes wondering now what he has to do to live up to this title! Myra then announced that the Esprit de Corps Trophy was being presented to not one, but two members this year, due to their outstanding dedication to the Club. The pair had spent the best part of five weeks lifting floors, digging out and replacing drains & laying a new floor. Tommy McDonagh & John (Curly) Black were awarded the trophy with thanks from all members. This trophy had been given to the Club by Jake of McLay Glazing, the Clubs longest serving sponsor, to be awarded each year to someone who goes above & beyond for the Club. Fish teas, and the obligatory sing song followed the presentation. Next year will be better! Myra 2017

CLOSING DAY - MCLAREN ROSEBOWL Members are invited to enter the McLaren Rosebowl Mixed Triples to be held on Saturday 30 September. Please be at the Clubhouse for 1pm for 1.30pm start. The draw will be made on the day. This will also be Closing Day & members are invited to stay on for fish suppers afterwards. Please return any trophies you may have. Thank you Myra Campbell BOWLS CHAMPIONSHIP DAY Due to illness, holidays and the fact that some players are involved in two or more finals, we only have two finals being held on Saturday 23 September. It is hoped that these games will both be played at 2.30pm, weather permitting. If there is a change to this time, I will send another email nearer the time. Please keep an eye on your email. The two games taking place will be:- Ladies Championship - Lynn Lauffer -v- Myra Campbell and The Matt Taylor - Tam MacDonald -v- Curly Black It is hoped that the other finals can be played over the next week or two. It would be nice to have some spectators on Saturday and if you are free please come along. Myra Campbell LADIES DAY Ladies Day which is scheduled for Sunday 10th September has had to be cancelled due to drainage works in the clubhouse. This is a hard blow for the Club as we have already lost out on our Gents' Triples this season due to extremely low entry. The Gents' Triples is our biggest earner of the season and with a small entry to our Gents' Pairs and having to cancel our Ladies Day it's not been a good season for us. Myra Campbell CHAMPIONSHIP DAY Due to the ongoing works in the Clubhouse at the moment, it has been agreed by Committee that Championship Day will be put back one week to Saturday 23rd September. A note of times of games will be sent out nearer the date. Myra Campbell GENTS' PAIRS sponsored by John Tyre & Son What a super wee afternoon at Innellan on Sunday 27 August when we hosted the John Tyre & Son Gents' Pairs. We might only have had 12 pairs but I'd like to thank most sincerely those who did enter and hope that you enjoyed it as much as we did. The weather was lovely and the banter was great. The bowling was of a very high standard too and I'd like to congratulate the winning pair of Jimmy Reid & Stevie Scott who lifted the Shield for 2017 and also to the runners up Ian Goffin & Andy Scott. The Spider was won by Ian Goffin and the proceeds were given to our sponsors for their chosen charity. The bottle was donated by Dougie Lauffer. I think today showed us not to give up with small entries but to go ahead and make the most of it. Thanks to VP Tommy McDonagh and my lady helpers. All in all a nice wee finish to Cowal Games weekend. Myra Campbell EGM An EGM has been called for the evening of Monday 11 September at 7pm in the Clubhouse. This is to discuss important issues relating to the Club and papers will be sent out over the next couple of days. Please attend this meeting if at all possible. Myra
Campbell BAGPACKING Our annual fundraiser of bagpacking at Morrisons will be Friday 15 September commencing at 9am. There is a sheet for names on the noticeboard in the clubhouse and I would ask for as many volunteers as possible to offer their services. This is a very worthwhile money maker as it costs the Club nothing but makes a very tidy sum of money. If you have a friend who would like to come along to help out, this would be most appreciated. Thank you in advance Myra
Campbell HARRY GORDON SUCCESS As you are all aware the Dunoon Bowling Tournament was held last week on the Cowal Greens. This was the 70th anniversary of this prestigious tournament and one IBTC will certainly remember. Our very own Ian McGrouther won the main event (Gents' Singles) and lifted The Harry Gordon Trophy for 2017. Ian had to play 5 games to reach the final on Saturday and he knocked out some very proficient bowlers along the way. The late Archie McEwan who owned the garage in Innellan was the winner of this trophy in the competition's inaugural year, 1948. Ian is now the second Innellan winner in 69 years. What an achievement. We are so proud of Ian and would like to congratulate him for bringing the trophy back home. Lets hope that it's not another 69 years till Innellan wins it again. The final was against Graham Pattison of Caledonia BC. We send our best wishes to him also for reaching the final this year. Myra
Campbell THE VILLAGERS ROYAL CHALLENGE SHIELD - 6 August 2017 Thanks to everyone who contributed in any way to make The Villagers' Royal Open Pairs such a success. The lovely Scottish weather tried it's best to flood the green and blow us about but Cowal bowlers are made of strong stuff! Even the green enjoyed its "swallie" The winners were Chris Dickson and Andy Scott (the defending champions). Runners up Stewart McInnes & Stevie Scott, semi finalists Scott Richmond & Ian Goffin and Rikki McIntyre & Callum Goffin. Congratulations to all players for sticking with it through the rain and wind. Special thanks to Dave and Louise of The Villagers' Royal and Dougie Cuninghame for their sponsorship. Well done to our "Hot Shots" Brian Robertson and Douglas Black Lovely to see Past President David Morrison and his wife Jean. Myra
Campbell BOWLS SCOTLAND TIES Congratulations
to Myra Campbell on making it through to the District
Finals of the Ladies Singles Bowls Scotland
Championships. Myra will be playing her District Final at
Rothesay on Sunday 18 June and we wish her every success
in her attempt to reach the national finals at Ayr. THE OSBORNE TROPHY MIXED TRIPLES Seventeen triples from Colintraive, Dunoon Argyll, Kirn & Hunters Quay, Rothesay and the host club were joined by friends from Bishopton making a welcome first visit to Innellan, to compete for The Osborne Trophy on Saturday 10 June. Despite there having been rain for the best part of the preceding twenty four hours, play got under way with three sections of six teams playing five games of five ends. The winners of each section were joined by the highest runner up overall in the semi final. The
semi finalists were Craig and Ann Margaret Houston and
Dougie Black (Dunoon Argyll); Lillian and Roddy McDonald
and Stewart McInness (Innellan & Kirn &
Hunters Quay); Vanda and Andy Brown and Tommy
Morrow (Innellan) and Ian and Dot McGrouther and Myra
Campbell (Innellan). Ian McGrouthers triple made the better start to the final and seemed to find the green that bit better. Despite a valiant effort by Stewart McInnes triple to get back into the match The Osborne Trophy went to Ian McGrouther, Dot McGrouther and Myra Campbell. Congratulations to them and thanks to all who took part on the day. The Osborne Trophy and prizes were presented by Peter Ramsay of The Osborne who sponsored the competition and provided a delicious buffet. President Jim Elsby thanked Peter Ramsay and Elliot Scholes of The Osborne for their support and continued sponsorship as without them and our other sponsors the club would find it difficult to continue. He also thanked the ladies who provided the soup and sandwich lunch, Carrie OBrien and her helpers behind the bar and Archie Tait for organising the draw and maintaining the score board as well as all who had taken part as without them the day would not be possible. He also congratulated all bowlers who had qualified for the next round of the Bowls Scotland Championships and wished them well in their forthcoming ties. BOWLS SCOTLAND TIES Bowls Scotland ties have been played over the past few weeks and our ladies and gents are, so far, doing quite well. Those through to the semi finals weekend of 11 June are:- Gent's 4s Tommy Morrow, Nigel Potts, Tam MacDonald & Dougie Lauffer Gent's Triples Tommy McDonagh, Craig McDonagh & Dougie Cuninghame Ladies Pairs Eileen Brand & Dorothy McGrouther Ladies Singles Myra Campbell We wish them all well in their respective matches on Sunday (& Monday). The 4's are playing on Monday evening at Upper Cowal if anyone would like to go along and give their support. The others are playing in the Inverclyde area. Well done to all our ladies and gents who played in the Scottish ties, some being very unlucky to lose by a single shot. GEORGE CAMERON MEMORIAL QUAICH GENT's TRIPLES The Club will host this competition on Saturday 24 June - entries will close on Monday 19 June. There is a sheet for names in the Clubhouse. This tournament will be sponsored by Nan & Jim Cook and Dougie Cuninghame to whom go our grateful thanks for their continued support to the club. INTERNAL CLUB COMPETITION TIES Several members have made a start to playing their club competition ties. This is just a reminder to others to check the board and/or the website for progress and to ensure you meet the deadline dates for each round. If you think you will have a problem playing your tie before the deadline, please contact Tommy McDonagh or Ian McGrouther to discuss. Good luck to everyone. NEIL MCCORMICK TRIPLES
19 members took part in the annual balloted mixed triples for the Neil McCormick Trophy on Saturday 20th May. The weather didn't look too promising in the morning, but as so often happens, Innellan seemed to miss the heavy showers experienced by bowlers in other parts of Cowal. Although it was a little cold to begin with, the sun came out & it turned into a really nice afternoon. It was good to have Isabel McGillivray on the green too. The winners, after a photo finish, were Irene McDonald, Lynn Lauffer & Ian McGrouther. Congratulations to them & to all who took part. Members then enjoyed suppers of their choice, delivered by Anselmo's. All in all a very pleasant way to finish off our day. Thanks to everyone who helped on the day. Myra
Campbell EXTRAORDINARY GENERAL MEETING An EGM will be held in the Clubhouse on Monday 03 April at 7.30pm. The reason for this EGM is to appoint a new Club President and Vice President. As you all know, President David is moving out of the area but none of us thought it would have been so soon. The house went on the market two weeks ago and it was sold to the first viewer. Many folks' dream but it has all come a bit quicker than expected for Jean and David. As they will be moving at the beginning of May, President David and Committee felt it would be better for the Club to hold an EGM sooner rather than later. This will also give David and Jean a bit more time to see to the hundred and one things they have to attend to before moving. President David will be there to help the new President through his/her first few weeks and the remainder of Committee will also assist when necessary. We are also looking to appoint a new Vice President as Craig McDonagh has had to step down due to personal reasons. I hope as many of the members as possible will attend the EGM. If you can't attend and you would like to propose someone, or be happy to be nominated yourself, please put this in writing to the Secretary prior to the meeting. Changing days for our wee Club but I'm sure it will all work out well in the end. Myra BOWLING MEETING The Committee proposes to hold the Bowling Meeting on Monday 03 April following the EGM. It would be great if as many bowlers as possible could stay behind for this meeting. Thank you. Myra COWAL BOWLING CLUBS OPENING DAYS These are the dates for the Openings of all Cowal Clubs for 2017: SATURDAY 01 APRIL - ARDENTINNY SUNDAY 02 APRIL - KIRN & HUNTER'S QUAY SATURDAY 08 APRIL - DUNOON ARGYLL BC SUNDAY 09 APRIL - BOGLEHA BC SATURDAY 15 APRIL - INNELLAN BC SATURDAY 22 APRIL - UPPER COWAL BC (tbc) Tennis Section 2017 The tennis section has a slightly longer season than the bowlers, running from opening day in April until October, or sometimes November each year, depending on the weather. There are two red blaes tennis courts (as used in the French Open). We ask that all players should wear flat-soled shoes as the surface can easily be damaged by shoes with a rough tread. New members, both senior and junior are always welcome as are visitors. Free coaching is available. Club sessions take place on Wednesday evenings from 7pm and Saturday afternoons from 3pm. Members can make their own arrangements to play at any other times. There is an annual mixed doubles tournament which is open to anyone in the community as well as members of other clubs. This is usually a popular event due to the substantial afternoon tea provided by members. The club championships run throughout the season and culminate in a prize-giving shared with the bowling section in November. The junior section is open to all children from age 8 and above. Junior members may arrange to play at any time and there is also a dedicated Junior night every Monday (weather permitting). There are two groups: those at primary school come from 5 - 6.30pm and those at secondary school from 6.30 until 8pm. Free coaching is provided and a tuck shop is run on Monday nights. The junior championships are hotly contested and held at the end of the season. Children of primary school age are entitled to free membership if they have a parent who is a member of the club. Tennis for juniors is on Monday evenings starting at the end of April when coaching will be available - primary school age group (8+) from 5 - 6.30pm and secondary school age group from 6.30 - 8 pm . New junior members are welcome. Why not come along and give it a try - no need to have all the equipment at this stage, we provide all the equipment you will need to get started you just need to bring flat soled shoes. There is also a tuck shop on Monday evenings. More players, beginners, or experienced, always welcome! Club nights are on Wednesdays from 7 pm. PLEASE CHECK CALENDAR FOR FORTHCOMING EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE SEASON IMPORTANT MESSAGE There will be an EGM on Sunday 14 January 2018 at 2pm, in the clubhouse. I hope as many of the members as possible can attend. This meeting has been called following the resignation of both the President & Vice President. It is important that these positions are filled as soon as possible. I look forward to seeing you there. Myra Click to see the full list of prizwewinners for 2017 JUNIOR TENNIS UPDATE Innellan Bowling and Tennis Club's junior section had a very good season, in spite of it being one of the wettest summers most of us can remember. Unfortunately the older (Grammar School age) group was not well-attended and had to fold after a few weeks. The younger (Primary age 8+) group was well-attended throughout the season, with several new faces coming for the first time. Everyone played extremely well in the championships. It was wonderful to see how focussed everyone was when playing their ties; even the chattier ones were almost quiet! The concentration paid off and there were some very exciting rallies and close results from all players. Thank you all for your hard work and we'll look forward to another great season next year. Campbell INNELLAN TENNIS TOURNAMENT
This annual tournament was held on Sunday, 11 June at Innellan Bowling and Tennis Club. Weather conditions were fair - cloudy and dry with a nice breeze keeping the midges at bay. However, rain stopped play in the third round. There were 5 players with the highest scores and after a count-back of games lost, the winners were Charlie Weall and Eric Fletcher. Morag McFarlane and Margaret Lauder were the close runners up. Afterwards, tea and cakes were served in the tennis pavilion. Thanks to all who contributed to making it such an enjoyable event. SAD NEWS - June MacIver and Moyra Donald
June MacIver, Secretary of our sister Club, Colintraive, passed away suddenly this week.
June was a stalwart of her Club and will be sadly missed by all Cowal bowlers.
Our thoughts go to June's brother Craig and other family and friends.
Funeral arrangements to follow.
------------
Moyra Donald, past member of Colintraive BC also passed this week. She had a long life and our thoughts are with her family and friends.
Moyra was a great character and a "good wee booler". It was lovely to see her at the Anniversary Dinner in June.
There will be a Celebration of Moyra's life in Colintraive Church on Thursday 28 September at 2pm. All welcome.
Innellan likes to think of Colintraive as part of our own and we are deeply saddened to lose both ladies.

BAGPACKING
I am pleased to report that IBTC's Bagpacking Fundraiser held on Friday 15 September amassed the terrific amount of ?482. Considering that there were considerably less "packers" than last year, we are absolutely delighted with the outcome.
The Club would like to thank each and every one of the volunteers on the day (including five of our new Club members). Another wee thanks to Jan Pender and Bill Currie who stayed behind at the end of the day to count the "spoils".
We couldn't have done this fundraiser without the co-operation of Morrisons Supermarket and we would like to thank them for their continued support to IBTC.

QUIZ NIGHT - 7 AUGUST
IBTC hosted a Quiz Night on Monday evening as part of the entertainment for the Dunoon Tournament week.
Nine teams participated with names such as "Titanics", "The Dougalies", "Where's John" and "Di's away, Let's Play".
Huge thanks to Alison Tarkenter, our Quizmaster and to everyone who who came along to join in. These quizzes are starting to feel like a family affair as the same folks usually attend. Special wee thanks to Dunoon Argyll BC for their support (Allison Strachan, Ian Wright, Douglas Black, Mary & Ian Brooks) and to Alan Reid who celebrated his birthday with us.
The winners, once again, were Archie Tait's Team (Di's away - Let's Play").
Congrats to Maggie, Dave, Barbara and Archie.

CANCELLATION OF GALA DAY - 22 JULY
It is with much regret that the Committee has decided to cancel our Gala Day which should have been held on Saturday 22 July.
The Club relied heavily on Past President David Morrison who invested much personal time and effort in not only organising this event but also obtaining sponsorship and donations from local businesses. Unfortunately the Committee at present are not in a position to do this and while recognising Past President David's disappointment, reluctantly decided to cancel rather than hold an event which would have fallen short of what is expected of our Gala Day. Alternatives were considered but it was decided they were not suitable replacements for this event.
The Committee will be giving careful consideration to organising future fund raising events at its next meeting and any suggestions etc. will be warmly welcomed.

WEDDING CONGRATULATIONS
The Club wish to congratulate Craig McDonagh and Marissa Campbell following their marriage at Knockdhu House on Saturday 10 June. We wish them good luck, good health and all good wishes for their future happiness together.
OPENING OF GREEN & COURTS
It was lovely to have such a large turnout of members and friends at our 163rd Opening Ceremony on Saturday 15 April.
President David Morrison welcomed everyone and spoke of his sadness at leaving the Club in May. He then passed to Dan Whyte of Upper Cowal BC who spoke on behalf of the kindred clubs. Dan said that Innellan had been the Club where he had achieved many bowling triumphs over the years. He wished the Club a successful season and also wished Jean and David all the best for the future and said they would be missed by the bowling community.
Peter Ramsay
(The Osborne) who together with his business partner, Elliot
Scholes then spoke of his honour of being asked to open the Club
today. He said that he and Elliot thoroughly enjoy their weekly
afternoon at the Club taking on Dougie and John. He said that
they are even getting to grips with some of the
"lingo".
He also mentioned Jean and Davids' impending departure and said
how much the Club and locals would miss them.
Jean Morrison then delivered the first jack and bowls with her usual accuracy.
The weather was fine for the most part of the afternoon and 24 hardy bowlers played an 8 end wappenschaw. The "first toucher" of the season was played by our own Donnie Scott. The winning triple consisted of Eileen Brand (Innellan), Scott Richmond (Kirn & HQ) and Dougie Cuninghame (Innellan). All the winners received an IBTC inscribed Easter Egg.
President Elect Jim Elsby then presented a gift to Jean and David from all the members and wished them all the best for the future. He thanked them both for their dedication to the Club in their short time with us. He said that he hoped they would visit often and also to expect plenty of bowling visitors to their new home.
There followed a lovely afternoon tea and a massive raffle.
The rest of the afternoon/evening was enjoyed with a few refreshments and a wee sing song.
The bowling/tennis season has certainly started.

SAD NEWS
For those of
you who have not yet heard, I have some sad news. Our
President, David Morrison and his wife, Jean, will be
leaving our shores to head back across the water to be closer to
family.
Obviously we are happy for them if this is their decision but I'm
sure, like me, you will be sorry to hear this news.
David will
continue as President of the Club in the meantime and could
even see the season out. Their house has now gone on the
market and we can only hope (selfishly) that it doesn't sell
too quickly.
We will miss both Jean and David at the Club and have
lots to thank them for. They have both made a difference to our
wee Club in the 5 seasons they have been with us and we are
grateful for all their hard work.
I'd like to
think that Innellan (& especially IBTC) will always have a
special place in their hearts.
As I said at the start, it could be a few months before they
leave.
