What a fantastic day for closing of the Green on Saturday 1st October. 30 members and friends took to the Green in brilliant sunshine. Better weather than we've had for the best part of the season. Thanks to everyone who made it such a memorable day and special thanks to Him upstairs for the sunshine!! ????? There were 3 teams with 6 points + shots today and the runners up were Ernie Sykes, Myra Campbell and David Morrison (Skip). The winners who lifted the McLaren Rosebowl for 2016 were Carrie O'Brien, Dot McGrouther and Curly Black (Skip). Congratulations to them all and to everyone for taking part. Thanks also to those who brought along raffle prizes & home baking. Everyone then enjoyed "suppers" delivered by Anselmos. Can't believe another season has finished but I'm sure that we'll all be back, refreshed , in April to do it all again. In the meantime I hope everyone has a happy and healthy winter and I'm sure we will meet up at Indoor or Carpet Bowling. Myra Campbell DONNIE GALBRAITH MEMORIAL TROPHY at COLINTRAIVE
12 Innellan bowlers and our friend Ann McDonald travelled to our sister Club at Colintraive on Sunday 25th September to play for the Donnie Galbraith Memorial Shield. We were so lucky with the weather following the washout of a day on Saturday, resulting in the cancellation of Innellan's closing of the Green. The format was 4 x games of 6 x ends with the highest scoring triple from each Club receiving prizes. The lowest scoring triple from each Club received the boobies. The Club with the highest points and shots overall took the trophy for 2016, by a very narrow margin (8 points + 100's of shots - 2 points - shots) Congratulations to our (ex) friends from Colintraive for giving us such a walloping!! We are blaming the rain, the sun, the wasps and the drink they forced us to take, oh yes and the lack of GRASS. Huge thanks to Nan and Jim Cook for their continued sponsorship of this tournament and to President Curly Black, Secretary June Maciver and all members of Colintraive. June Maciver then presented Nan and Jim Cook with a wee gift for their dedication to the Club throughout the season. Last word from David Morrison, President of Innellan who gave a vote of thanks to Colintraive for another memorable day. Haste
ye Back BOWLING SECTION - FINALS WEEKEND The Club had a very busy weekend with Bowling Finals held on Saturday & Sunday. A big thanks to all the markers, the ladies/gents who supplied soup/savouries/baking and to the spectators on both days. Thanks to the gents who set out the green and to our Greenkeeper, Derek, for having the Green in pristine condition for the finals. It's a team effort and once again the Club came up trumps! The outcome of the games held on Saturday was:- MIXED PAIRS - DAISY MILLER SHIELD Jean & David Morrison won the Daisy Miller Shield, beating Dot & Ian McGrouther. Jean & David held the lead throughout the game, with Dot & Ian taking a 5 in the latter stages, bringing them back into contention. Great game to watch and congratulations to the winners & runners up. LADIES CHAMPIONSHIP Myra Campbell secured a win against her opponent Jean Morrison following a great game of bowls. Myra looked like she was romping home when the score was 20 - 10 but that was certainly not the case. Whenever Myra drew the "winning" shot, Jean came in and swiftly took it out. This went on until the score was 20 - 17 when Myra managed to secure that "one wee shot" taking her to 21. It was a great game and thanks to the spectators for their support to both players. Congrats to Myra and also to Jean for making it such a great final! GENTS' CHAMPIONSHIP Ian McGrouther took on John (Curly) Black in this very important final. It was certainly Ian's day and he romped home with ease. Congratulations to Ian and well done to Curly. Rink 6 is a devil of a rink! MATT TAYLOR (MIXED SINGLES) Archie Tait took on Barry Chapman in the final of this competition, sometimes known as The Club Championship as ladies & gents can both enter. Archie took the lead early on and just managed to outplay Barry on the day. Congratulations to Archie on winning this trophy yet again and well done to Barry reaching the final. SUNDAY LADIES PAIRS - THE LAMONT TROPHY Jean Morrison & Myra Campbell had a great game against Vanda Brown & Lynn Lauffer. The game was close until just after half way through, when Jean & Myra took a wee lead and managed to secure their win and take the Lamont Trophy for 2016. Another good game played in the spirit of bowling. Well done to all four players. GENTS' PAIRS Andy Brown & Sandy Jackson took on Ian McGrouther & Jim Elsby in this years Gents' Pairs championship final. Although Andy & Sandy played some great bowls, it was Ian & Jim who caught the rink from the start. Well done to Ian & Jim on winning for 2016 and to Andy & Sandy (I feel a song coming on) on reaching the final. VICE-PRESIDENTS TROPHY David Morrison took on Barry Chapman in the Vice President's Trophy. It was a great game to watch with David taking the lead and Barry playing catch up. When David was on 19 shots Barry started to play serious catch up and made it difficult for David to finish the game. David persevered though and took the trophy for 2016. Congrats to David & to Barry for such a good game. PRESIDENTS' TROPHY Archie Tait took on Craig McDonagh in this final. Another great game for the spectators and one which could have gone either way. Craig persevered though and overcame his opposition to take the trophy for 2016. Congratulations to Craig and to Archie. SYKES TROPHY Dot McGrouther took on Myra Campbell in the Sykes Trophy. Both players struggled with the rink for the first few ends. Both agreed that the rink (yes that rink 6 again) was difficult to catch, or was it the wind or the rain (or lack of drink)??? Anyway Dot caught it better than Myra and romped home to take the trophy for 2016. Well done to her & better luck next time to Myra. SECRETARY'S PLATE (LADIES SINGLES) The final of the Secretary's Plate (for ladies who have not won one of the Singles' Trophies) was played for on Thursday afternoon with Vanda Brown taking on Jean Morrison. A close game until half way through when Jean caught the run of the rink that bit better. Jean went on to take the trophy for 2016. Well done ladies for such a good game. Myra CLOSING DAY - McLAREN ROSEBOWL INTERNAL MIXED TRIPLES It is hard to believe that the season for bowling is almost over. It doesn't seem like any time since I was writing about Opening Day. The Club will hold its annual closing day's Internal Triples for the prestigious McLaren Rosebowl on Saturday 24th September at 1.30 for 2pm. All members are welcome to enter this tournament and should enter their names on the sheet displayed on the noticeboard in the Clubhouse. As usual, if you are able to provide a little bit of something tasty for the afternoon tea that would be great. All donations gratefully received. Just think, you won't have to bake for the club after this until next April, other than when we run fundraisers throughout the winter of course. Whether we order Anselmo's Suppers for afterwards will be the choice of the players on the day. We can decide this prior to play commencing, giving me time to order the goodies. In the meantime, please get your name on the sheet as soon as you can. Bowling Dress on the day please. Looking forward to seeing you there. Myra CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND - BOWLING SECTION We will be holding the finals of our championships (Ladies & Gents) and other internal competition finals over the weekend of Saturday/Sunday 17th/18th September. I would ask that as many of you come along to watch as possible. It is nice for the finalists to have support from club members. If you could each provide a "small" plate of food, this would be greatly appreciated. It could be anything from crisps/savoury, sausage rolls, sandwiches, cake (home made or bought). Any food donated will be used on both days at weekend. Thank you all in advance. The programme is as follows:-
There will be a final held on Thursday 15th September (tomorrow afternoon) at 2.30pm. This is the Ladies Secretary's Plate and the finalists are Jean Morrison -v- Vanda Brown. Please feel free to come along to spectate tomorrow if you can. If you have any questions relating to the above, please feel free to ask and if I can't answer them, I will find someone who can! I can't believe the season is almost over but I think we have had another very successful season and this is due to you all - our members! Myra LADIES DAY - SPONSORED BY McLAY GLAZING
Thank you to all the ladies who turned out for our annual Ladies' Day sponsored once again by Jake McLay. The Club truly appreciates Jake's continuing support. It was lovely to welcome back our old friends from Inverkip and Lochgoilhead. Thanks too go to Ardentinny, Dunoon Argyll, Colintraive, Kirn and our very own bunch. It was great to have past members with us for lunch too (Alex McDonagh and Mary MacDonald) and Isabel McGillivray (Hon. Member) and our social member Sandra. Thanks to our gents' section who looked after us so well. They worked hard and I think they quite enjoyed it. They actually looked quite good in their striped aprons. Thanks to Archie and Donnie for their home grown tomatoes (size doesn't matter guys) and to everyone for their raffle prizes and home baking. Following 5 qualifying games, the pairs going through to the semis were:- Irene McAllister - Lochgoilhead & Allison Strachan - Dunoon Argyll (Skip), Shirley Sykes -Innellan & Jessie McNaughton - Colintraive (Skip), Isobel Strathdee - Dunoon Argyll & Dot McGrouther - Innellan (Skip) & Louisa Black - Colintraive & Jean Morrison - Innellan (Skip). The two Innellan/Colintraive pairs went through to the final following very convincing wins over their opponents. The final was a super game to watch and could have gone either way right up to the last end. Congratulations to Louisa & Jean taking the trophy for 2016 and well done to the very worthy runners up Shirley & Jessie. Our own Jacky McLay and grandson Peter presented the prizes on behalf of the family. Myra then thanked all the ladies for making it such a special day and spoke of the difficulty of attracting bowlers to open tournaments. She said that all the Clubs had to pull together and support each other. She then spoke of Jean George, a member who had passed away earlier this year. Jean loved Ladies' Day and many of the ladies attending today would have been the recipients of Jean's hand made gifts. Myra said she was sure that she would be looking down today, thinking of us. Thankyou again one and all who helped to make this day such a special one. Myra LADIES BALLOTED TRIPLES - SUNDAY 11th SEPTEMBER We will be hosting our Ladies Day on Sunday 11th September and look forward to welcoming as many members as possible. Hopefully our Gents will look after us as they usually do on this special day. It is a treat for the ladies to be pampered as we usually do the pampering. This tournament is sponsored once again by Jake McLay of McLay Glazing and we would like to mention our gratitude to the McLay family for their years of kindness to the Club. The invites will be going out imminently and I look forward to welcoming as many of you as possible on the day. If you have friends in another Bowling Club outwith Cowal, please feel free to invite them to come along for the day. Closing date will be Monday 5th September. Myra - Secretary DUNOON TOURNAMENT WEEK President David would like to thank all the members who gave so willingly of their time during the Dunoon Tournament Week. The Club hosted a record amount of 57 games on the Green between Monday 1st August - Friday 5th August and this in turn meant that markers, umpires, kitchen staff, bar staff and help around the green was required each day. It would have been great if a few more members had been available but thanks to the ones who turned out each day to assist. I'm glad to say that the feedback from the visitors was very positive. They seemed to enjoy coming to our lovely Green and enjoyed the hospitality from IBTC and our Green was given a "very good" rating. Well done all concerned. GENTS' PAIRS SPONSORED BY TYRE & SONS
On Saturday 13 August, 18 pairs attended from Bogleha, Colintraive, Dunoon Argyll, Cambusbarron, Gourock, Kirn & HQ, Upper Cowal and host club Innellan to compete in the annual Gents' Pairs competition sponsored by Tyre & Sons. We were so lucky that the weather improved from the terrible conditions only the day before when the Green was flooded. Congratulations to Jimmy Reid & Stevie Scott who took the Shield for 2016. The very worthy runners up (once again) representing the sponsors were Terry Pearce & Willie Wilson. A spider was also held, the proceeds of which go to the sponsors for their chosen charity. Thanks to Dougie Lauffer for donating the bottle. This was won by Jimmy Reid with his bowl falling against the "winning" bowl at last minute to gain pole position. Jimmy Reid - winner of competition & spider. Thanks to all who took part, Jean for bar, Dot, Carrie & Shirley for kitchen, Archie for board, Derek for Green and special thanks to Tyre & Son for continued support to IBTC. Thanks to our overseas visitors "the ex-servicemen" who brought 4 pairs across the water to Innellan. One pair did reach the semi's and they won the vodka in the raffle. They've already booked for next year. Last words to Jimmy & Stevie - Well done! ARCHIE'S PAIRS- THE VILLAGERS' ROYAL CHALLENGE SHIELD
The Villagers' Royal Challenge Shield, affectionately known as Archie's Pairs, held at Innellan on the Sunday is the traditional forerunner to The Dunoon Bowls Tournament, also known as Harry Gordon Week, in the first week in August. As always there was a healthy turn out for this popular competition sponsored by The Villagers' Royal. The winners of the morning and afternoon sessions plus the highest runners up played off in the afternoon and this year the overall winners were Andy Scott and Chris Dixon who overcame last year's winners Willie Wilson and Archie Tait in the final. Unfortunately Louise and Dave of The Villagers Royal could not make it to the green to present the trophy but undaunted Andy and Chris took the trophy to the bar to celebrate with them. Thanks to all who took part - we hope you enjoyed the day - and also to those who helped in any way to ensure this was a successful day. Good luck to all in the Harry Gordon. HARRY GORDON QUIZ NIGHT
IBTC's Quiz Night is the inaugural social event of Harry Gordon week. There was a great turn out for the Quiz and thanks are due to Quiz Mistress Alison Tarkenter as well as kindred Club bowlers Alison Strachan, Bill Strathdee, Ian Wright and Dougie Black (Dunoon Argyll); Jackie Diamond (Bogleha') and John and Jeanette McCartney (Gourock) for their support. We are also grateful to our regulars who keep coming back for more and were pleased to welcome newcomers Helen Munroe; Jack and Ailsa; to Jean for keeping liquid refreshments flowing despite this being her night off and to President David "...for being a nuisance". The winning team was David and Maggie Singleton and Archie and Di Tait. THE
OSBORNE TROPHY
With 54 bowlers booked in to take part in our annual Open Mixed Triples, it was a busy day for our wee Club. This tournament was sponsored once again by The Osborne and we have to thank Peter and Elliot for their continued support. As usual, the arrangements were all in place and Archie Tait, although unable to participate this year, had prepared the board ready for the day to begin. The format was 3 x sections of 6 x teams playing 5 x games of 5 x ends, taking the top triple from each section together with the next highest up triple overall through to the Semi finals. The 3 triples qualifying as section winners were:- Lynn Lauffer, Dougie Lauffer & Fraser Lauffer (Skip) Innellan; Agnes Scott, Bridie Ferguson & Andy Scott (Skip) Kirn & Hunters Quay; Dorothy McGrouther, David Morrison & Ian McGrouther (Skip) Innellan. The triple who joined them in the semi-finals was another Innellan team, Myra Campbell, Tommy McDonagh & Craig McDonagh (Skip). The semi between Kirns Andy Scott and Innellans Ian McGrouther could have gone either way. The first couple of ends went to Kirn with Innellan coming from behind to reach the final. The other Innellan final was more one-sided with Craigs triple taking the lead over last years winner Fraser and going into the last end 6-2. This resulted in an all Innellan final. Some good bowling was played by both teams but the run of the rink was definitely with Craigs triple and they became the proud winners of The Osborne Trophy. Congratulations to Myra, Tommy & Craig and well done to the worthy runners up, Dorothy, David & Ian. Special thanks to Peter Ramsay of The Osborne who attended to present the prizes. The Osborne also put up a Voucher with a value of ?50 towards a meal/drinks at the Osborne. This was won by Craig McDonagh, making his day even more special. Thanks to the local bowlers, Colintraive and Rothesay and to everyone who helped in any way to make this day the success it was. Theres a lot of hard work goes in to these days and the local Clubs have to support one another. Haste ye Back BOWLS SCOTLAND DISTRICT FINALS Myra Campbell & Jim Elsby joined six other teams from Cowal to play in the District Finals at Gourock BC on Sunday 19 June. They started off well and held their own for the first 8 ends. Then things went downhill quickly and they lost 3 shots, followed by 4 shots and then 2 shots in consecutive ends. They managed to pick up 4 more shots but unfortunately, on the day, the better team definitely won. Their opponents from Gourock BC were Sandra and Dougie and they'd like to wish them well when they go to Northfield in Ayr. The team from Dunoon Argyll BC (Gents` Triples) and the Gents' 4 from Kirn & Hunters Quay BC put up great fights but were pipped at the post. The Ladies Pairs and Ladies Singles from Kirn and the Ladies Singles from Bogleha were well down. Cowal's only hopes at Northfield once again are the Upper Cowal Senior Fours who romped home in great style, leaving their opponents wondering what just happened. Innellan's best wishes go to Keith Campbell, Dan Whyte, Alex Kennedy & David Beattie. Thanks to Gourock BC for hosting the finals in very difficult weather conditions. Last words from Myra & Jim "if only". BOWLS
SCOTLAND TIES Innellan Green hosted Scottish ties on Thursday 9 and Sunday 11 June. Thanks to Bridie Ferguson (Kirn & Hunters Quay) and John Donald (Dunoon Argyll) who gave up their time to act as official umpires on these days. A lot of good games and Derek Logue certainly had the Green in tip-top condition. Thanks to Committee and members who gave up their time to act as markers and provide catering on these days. It has been a busy few days for members involved in the Bowls Scotland ties but unfortunately for Innellan members our interest has come to an end except for Myra Campbell and Jim Elsby who are through to the District finals in the Mixed Pairs. In the Ladies Singles, Jean Morrison in her first venture into this type of competition and playing on unfamiliar greens had a convincing first round victory but unfortunately lost when she came up against a more experienced opponent in the second round. In the Ladies Senior Singles Myra Campbell won a hard fought first round tie 21-17 but couldnt cope with the tropical conditions prevailing on the day and was edged out 21-20 in the second round. Clearly she needs some heat acclimatisation and will now be looking to move her training camp away from Braco in Perthshire. Dot McGrouther was also unable to progress in this competition. Dot and Myra teamed up in the Ladies Pairs and in evenly balanced game were three shots up going into the final end against their opponents from Rothesay only to lose on a measure for an extra end. The Gents Senior Four and the Gents Triple just couldnt find their game on the day and were unable to progress further. In the Gents Pairs Ian McGrouther and Jim Elsby were well down but managed to claw their way back to be one shot down going into the last end but unfortunately just could not get over the line. Well done to all our members who represented the Club and gave of their best - now to next year. BOWLS SCOTLAND TIES Gents Pairs and Triples Congratulations to our Gents Triple of David Morrison, Craig McDonagh and Archie Tait and the Gents Pair of Jim Elsby and Ian McGrouther who have progressed to the next round of the respective competitions. Mixed Pairs Congratulations to Myra Campbell and Jim Elsby who on Sunday 29 May at Inverkip fought their way through to the District Finals of the Bowls Scotland Mixed Pairs. Although leading by three shots going into the last end it took some inspired bowling by Myra to enable Jim to close out the match. They now look forward to the District Finals on June 19th. Ladies Singles Jean Morrison is through to the next round on Sunday 12 June. Myra Campbell and Dot McGrouther play their singles ties Thursday 9 June. Ladies Pairs Myra Campbell and Dot McGrouther team up in the Ladies Pairs on Sunday 12 June CLUB COMPETITIONS Gents Championship, The President's Trophy and Matt Taylor Trophy preliminary round ties were to be completed by 5 June. Congratulations and thanks to all concerned for completing their ties by this date - only one tie remains outstanding. The standout ties in the first round of the Matt Taylor were Jim Elsby v Myra Campbell and Craig McDonagh v Ian McGrouther. Jim showed his Bowls Scotland Mixed Pairs partner little mercy as he romped to a rather one sided victory in this tie. Ian will have to wait another year to get his hands on the Matt Taylor Trophy as Craig got the better of him in this one. NEIL
McCORMICK MEMORIAL TROPHY
24 club members took part in the first Internal competition of the season when we played for the Neil McCormick Memorial Shield on Saturday 21 May. The format was 3 games of 6 ends with the two highest up triples going on to a final. The bowlers were hardly on the green when the heavens opened and the rain steadily got worse. Then it was joined by thunder and wind. Anyone passing must have thought Are they mad? I suppose we are because we continued with play and eventually half way through the third game the sun came out. It was a close thing but the two teams who made it to the final were:- Garreth Garrett, Dougie Cuninghame & Lynn Lauffer (Skip) and David Singleton, Jean Morrison & Craig McDonagh (Skip). After a very competitive final, the winners were Lynns team. Congratulations to them and the very worthy runners up. It was nice to welcome Lorna & Myron Reid back to the Green for the afternoon and hopefully Lorna will forgive me for coaxing her to fill in on such a miserable day. The day ended with a substantial afternoon tea and a few drams. Thanks to everyone who helped on the day. Haste ye Back Myra
Campbell ROTHESAY BOWLING CLUB THE ROSEMARY WRIGHT MEMORIAL SALVER Rothesay BC v Colintraive/Innellan BTC
On Saturday 14 May, President John Wilson welcomed Colintraive/Innellan bowlers to the annual friendly, playing for the Rosemary Wright Memorial Salver. Following on from last years close defeat, Colintraive/Innellan were desperate to win and take the trophy overseas. The weather was just perfect for bowling. Five Mixed Triples from each Club played 16 ends of bowls with a refreshment break after 4, 8 & 12 ends. By the time the bowlers returned to the Green for the last 4 ends, everyone was feeling pretty happy. I dont know whether it was the drink or the sun that caused the visitors to keep losing shots but plenty of fun was had by all concerned. The ladies of RBC provided a lovely afternoon tea of soup, sandwiches, sausage rolls & meringues, followed by the usual raffle. Special thanks to Joan Reynolds who came along on her birthday to assist with the catering. President John then read out the scores (very discreetly) so as not to offend the visitors. Apparently Rothesay won by 98 shots to Colintraive/Innellans 47. Im quite convinced that our drinks were spiked. Mark Rankin, Agnes Connell & Alan Cowan (Skip) were the highest scoring triple for Rothesay with Alex McNaughton, Shirley Sykes & Myra Campbell (Skip) being the highest scoring away team (even though they still lost by 4 shots). Well done to all of them. All winners received a very generous prize and I must admit its the first time that Ive not minded losing. President John Wilson then thanked the visitors for attending, the ladies for the tea, everyone who had provided raffle prizes etc. He wished everyone a safe journey home and said he looked forward to next year. Colintraives President Curly Blackthen gave a vote of thanks on behalf of the visitors. He reiterated Johns thanks to all who had made this an enjoyable day and said that it was always a pleasure to come to Rothesay Bowling Club but that next year we would hopefully be taking the trophy back with us. He then presented the salver to President John Wilson for 2016. INNELLAN NEW POLO SHIRTS ON DISPLAY The Club Shirts have now arrived and the Gents' Section took the opportunity of showing them off at their League Match -v- Bogleha on 12 May. They scrubbed up quite well I thought! Unfortunately Innellan ladies haven't managed to put together a League Team this season but hopefully we will be back on course next year. They will proudly wear their shirts when representing the Club at Open Tournaments, Scottish, Cowal and Argyll & Bute ties. Myra GEORGE
CAMERON MEMORIAL GENTS TRIPLES ON INNELLAN GREEN
54 bowlers from Ardentinny, Bogleha, Colintraive, Dunoon Argyll, Kirn & HQ, Upper Cowal & the host Club gathered on Innellan Green on Sunday 8 May to play for the George Cameron Memorial Quaich. George was one of the true characters of IBTC and he would have been delighted to see such a turnout for his tournament. Once again Nan & Jim Cook sponsored the tournament with one of Georges closest friends, Dougie Cuninghame also contributing to the sponsorship. The weather held up for the whole day and everything ran to Archies timetable. The format was a round robin with three sections of 6 teams playing 5 games of 6 ends, with the winners of each section going through to the semi finals together with the overall highest runner up. The semi finalists were:- Rikki McIntyre, Stewart McIntyre & Willie Wilson (Bogleha) v- Donnie Scott, David Singleton & Barry Chapman (Innellan) and Fraser Pollock, Jim Wallace Jnr, & Andy Scott (Kirn & HQ) v- Edward Wallace, Eddie Wallace & Stevie Scott (Kirn & HQ & Upper Cowal). The
semi between Innellan & Bogleha was a close game with
Innellan having to draw for shot in the last end.
Unfortunately, although Barry did get the road perfectly,
his bowls just sailed past the jack, leaving Bogleha the
team to reach the final. This in no way detracts from the
Bogleha teams expertise. We are so proud of our
Innellan team with David Singleton who was playing in his
first big tournament. Next time get your names up boys!
Well done to all. The final started with Willie Wilsons triple taking 6 shots in the first end. It is not unknown but it is certainly very unusual for Stevies team to lose a 6 in any end of bowls and it made for very exciting spectating. Willies team then took another 2 single shots in the next 2 ends leaving the score at 8 0 with 3 ends to play. Stevies triple took the 4th and were lying a possible 5 shots in the 5th end before Willie played a beautifully drawn shot to quell their chances of catching up. Willies team took the final end and the Trophy for 2016. It was a fantastic game to watch and certainly one that the Bogleha boys should be proud of. Well done to all the finalists and to everyone who participated in any way on the day. The spider was won by Tommy McDonagh with the bottle having been donated by Jim Elsby. President David Morrison thanked all those who had attended, especially the Rothesay boys for travelling over for the game. He said that without support from our kindred Clubs and our sponsors that these days just wouldnt be possible. He thanked Myra & all the ladies who had attended to the catering & raffle throughout the day and to Jean in the bar. He thanked Archie for the board and Derek for the condition of the Green and everyone who had donated to the raffle & bought tickets. Nan Cook then presented the prizes and received a lovely bouquet from the Club. Willie Wilson reiterated Davids thanks to everyone and thanked his team. The trophy was then presented to the winners and photos taken. Haste Ye Back HYSLOP LEAGUE - FIRST HOME GAME
Innellan gents took on Upper Cowal/Ardentinny on 05 May to get the league under way for the 2016 season. The weather was dry and not too cold and I didn't hear anything about midges. Hot pies were served on completion and the score tonight was Innellan 4 - Upper Cowal/Ardentinny 6. It was great to see the Green full and everyone enjoying the camaraderie afterwards. Bowling has certainly started with a bang! Obviously Davy Beattie, Chris McCorquodale & Ernie Sykes were enjoying themselves anyway. GENTS' PAIRS DATE CHANGE Innellan's Gents' Pairs date has been changed to Saturday 13 August. Please update your fixture card. Ardentinny's Gents Triples which was cancelled due to adverse weather on Sunday 01 May has been rescheduled for Sunday 20 August. WAPPENSCHAWS Now that the lighter nights are with us, the Wappenschaws on Tuesday evenings commence at 7pm. This will be through the summer and will update the starting time in September if required. We had 28 members on Tuesday evening for the first night of the points. It was another dry night but still quite chilly. That's three weeks the wappenschaws have been going and our numbers have been 28, 25 and 28 respectively. Long may this continue. GREAT START TO THE SEASON FOR INNELLAN BOWLERS
Colintraive BC hosted the Bilsland Mixed Rinks on Saturday and Innellan was happy to win with Alex & Tommy McDonagh, Dougie Black (on loan from Dunoon Argyll), & Myra Campbell (Skip). This was sponsored by Bilsland Oils & Nan & Jim Cook and we had a super day. Two more of our members - Vanda & Andy Brown -paired up with two Rothesay ladies and they won the very special "Booby" prizes on the day. Thanks to Colintraive for their wonderful hospitality. LINDA WEIR MEMORIAL TRIPLES AT BOGLEHA BC.
Six Innellan members participated in the Linda Weir Memorial Triples on Saturday 30 April and following a great day which made a whole lot of money for charity, the winning team was Innellan's very own Dot & Ian McGrouther (Skip) & David Morrison. Thanks go Bogleha and the Weir family for all the work put in to make this a success and to everyone who gave so generously to the charity. (Spina Bifida). FIRST WAPPENSCHAW OF 2016 SEASON Beautiful night for first Wappenschaw of the 2016 Season. An amazing turnout of 28 bowlers who made the most of the opportunity to get in some practice on the outdoor green after the winter lay off. Might also have been something to do with the perfect weather - no wind, no rain and best of all no midges. We were pleased to welcome 5 possible new members who turned up to take part, making it even more special. Let's hope for many more nights like this. WAPPENSCHAWS Our weekly wappenschaws have started on Tuesday evenings. We will start at 6.30pm in the meantime with the time changing to the usual start time of 7pm once the evenings get lighter. The games are just for fun at the moment with the Points starting from first week in May. All welcome. It's a good way to meet up with other members and get some practice in. GEORGE CAMERON MEMORIAL OPEN GENTS' TRIPLES This popular tournament will take place on Sunday 8th May, commencing at 10am. The internal entry sheet is displayed in the Clubhouse and names should be entered as soon as possible with the closing date of 3rd May. The cost per triple is ?15 which covers your games & morning coffee/tea/biscuit on arrival. Catering will be available throughout the day in the form of soup/filled hot and cold filled rolls & cakes. The tournament is sponsored once again by Nan & Jim Cook and Dougie Cuninghame. Raffle prizes would be welcomed. HYSLOP LEAGUE - 2016 Season Following on from two meetings attended by President David Morrison & Past President Curly Black to discuss proposed changes to the Hyslop League, I am happy to report that the League will continue to be played on Thursday evenings. It was a close shave with the votes being 3 in favour of Thursday evenings and 3 in favour of a change to Fridays. Fortunately one of the Clubs which had voted for the Friday evening changed their vote and the outcome was 4 for & 2 against. TEAM SELECTORS - GENTS' SECTION Ian McGrouther & Archie Tait have been voted in as Team Selectors/Match Secretaries for the coming Season. Tennis Section 2016 JUNIOR TENNIS RESULTS - under 12 yrs
A great 2016 season culminated with the prize-giving on Monday 5th September, where the President treated the juniors to juice and crisps. The weather was kind this year, which resulted in no cancellations for any of the Junior Club nights. There was an added attraction with the introduction of a ball machine, which proved to be challenging, but the young players coped very well. Girls'

This is the bowling and tennis tournament that we have been unable to persuade few bowlers to play in for many years. It was a lovely day, great afternoon tea and the competition was won by Irene Hodge and Liz Gower. INNELLAN FESTIVAL OPEN DOUBLES TENNIS TOURNAMENT Sunday 5th June was a gloriously sunny day and in spite of the rival attraction of Andy Murray playing in the French Open final, several stalwarts came along to support the festival tournament. After three hard-fought rounds the final saw Helen Waddell and Morag MacFarlane claiming victory over Jean McKissock and Meg Henry. A big thank-you to sponsors David and Jean Morrison. PROMISING START TO 2016 SEASON The Junior Coaching commenced on Monday 18 April with a very encouraging number enrolling in the Under 12 age group. It would be good if we could recruit a few more teenagers for the Under 18 group. At present there are 21 Juniors with the majority in the Under 12 group. On Monday 25 April the new Ball Machine was introduced into the coaching system, with a great response from all the juniors. COACHING TIMES - MONDAYS Under 12's -
5pm - 6.30pm There is plenty of scope for new talent in the adult section and we would warmly welcome any new players regardless of playing ability. INA LAIDLAW A former member of IBTC passed away recently. Ina was a member of the Bowling Section back in my very early days in the Club. Her funeral will be held in Toward Church on Monday 16 January at 11am. The Committee & membership send their sincere condolences to Ina's family. The Club flag is at half mast as a sign of respect & will remain so until 16 Jan. Myra
Campbell BETTY McNAIR I'm sorry to report the passing of
one of our ex members, Betty McNair. Our condolences to Jimmy and the family. The flag at the Club has been put to half mast until Friday when Betty will be buried in Clydebank. Myra Campbell REMEMBRANCE DAY President David will lay a poppy wreath from IBTC on Sunday 13 November at the Cenotaph in Innellan Village. All welcome to attend. Refreshments to follow in the Village Hall. IBTC POPPY WREATH This is IBTC's Poppy Wreath, made again this year by Angela Convery, Florist with Raes. She attaches the insert to the oasis. Angela makes this with paper poppies and donates the payment from the Club to The Earl Haig Poppy Fund. The Club would like to thank Angela for her support to the Club. Myra Campbell ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Please note that the AGM will be held at 2pm on Sunday 20 November in the Clubhouse. The AGM papers have been emailed or hand delivered to all members. PRESENTATION DANCE 2016
The Club held its Presentation dinner on Saturday 5 November. Thanks to Dunoon Argyll Bowling Club for the use of their Clubhouse and to Willie and Bill for giving up their Saturday evening to look after us. Our caterer once again was Andrew and there were no complaints about his menu, other than perhaps "there was too much". Huge thanks to him and his waitresses Donna, Michelle and Karen who provided "service with a smile" President David Morrison thanked everyone who had come along and congratulated the winners and the players of the Year for both bowling (Jean Morrison) and tennis (Irene Hodge). He thanked his Committee and all the members who had assisted him in any way throughout the year; our kindred Club bowlers for their support and also our Greenkeeper Derek Logue for keeping the Green in "top form". He thanked the members for all the raffle prizes brought along this evening and thanked Craig McDonagh for donating the "IBTC" personalised bottle of whisky. Following our meal and the presentation of prizes by President David, Meg Henry (Tennis Convenor) and Myra Campbell (Secretary), the company enjoyed the music and songs of Liam Somerville. President David then presented the last trophy of the evening, the Esprit De Corps Trophy, which had been donated to the Club four years ago by Jake McLay (our longest serving sponsor). Jake had asked for this trophy to be awarded each year to someone who had the best interests of the Club at heart and who went that extra mile. President David said that the person receiving the trophy for 2016 was Myra Campbell. I was delighted to be chosen for this special trophy and to have my name alongside the previous winners. Dancing followed and the "pushing the penny" (well ? actually) to win the bottle. This was highly contested with lots of fun and determination. Jacky McLay was lying nearest for a while until Tommy McDonaghs coin managed to sneak in and lie closer. It remained the closest coin until the allotted time of 10 mins was over. Congrats to him and thanks to all the members for giving up their ???'s. The evening was another resounding success for the Club and I was so glad that all the planning went like clockwork. Myra
Campbell BAGPACKING DAY The Club fundraiser at Morrisons Supermarket was held on Friday 9th September. It was one of the wettest and windiest days of autumn so far. Whether that made a difference to how many customers came to shop, I'm not sure, but it certainly made the bagpackers quite happy to be indoors and not on the green or tennis courts. We'd like to say a huge thanks to Morrisons for allowing IBTC to hold this fundraiser, and also to the kindness of their customers for donating their hard earned cash. We'd also like to thank all those members who turned out for 2, 3 or 4 hours and gave up their time to benefit the Club. I'm delighted to report that the princely sum of ?686 was raised between the hours of 10am - 5pm. Well
done all concerned! OLIVER JONES Oliver, one of our Junior Tennis members, has tragically died as a result of a road traffic accident. The Club would like to send sincere condolences to Oliver's family and friends at this very sad time. Myra Campbell BAG PACKING DAY AT MORRISONS The Club has secured Friday 9th September as our annual bag packing day. We would appreciate as many members as possible - and Mums and Dads of junior members - to "take a turn" at packing bags on the day. Sheets have been displayed in Clubhouse and Tennis Pavilion for members to choose a time slot which suits them. Lets hope that the Club makes lots of money on the day. Myra - Secretary GALA DAY........... A GREAT SUCCESS
What can I say? I am almost speechless (and many would say that that in itself was a great success). Our Gala Day on Saturday 23 July was a resounding success and our most successful to date. I dont think we have ever seen so many cars lining the road outside the club. The weather stayed kind and a big thank you to everyone who supported what is now a firm fixture on the local calendar members, their families and friends, the local community, kindred clubs, visitors, the many businesses who donated bottles and prizes in one form or another for tombola, raffles etc. Special thanks go to The Osborne, The Villagers Royal, Co-Op Funeral Care, M & M Bouncy Castles, Anselmos and The Scottish Salmon Company, David & Euan Morrison, Eleanor Stevenson and Soozie Tarkenter. Additionally our thanks to members and friends who gave up so much of their time in particular Jan McKenzie and Alex McDonagh for their efforts in the bedlam that was hells kitchen. (If you wanted to lose weight that was the place to be). The Grand Raffle for a ?50 voucher for The Osborne and a chauffeur driven Limo ride to get you there was won by Roddy McDonald. After all our visitors had gone the workers ended the day by enjoying chip suppers kindly delivered by Anselmos. And so it is all over for another year. On behalf of the Committee I look forward to seeing you all, and many more, at next years Gala Day and once again our grateful and sincere thanks for everyones support. Myra Campbell GALA DAY It's that time of year again.................. Our Annual Gala Day will be on Saturday 23 July when once again we hope there will be a good turn out to support our major fund raising event. There will be all the usual attractions and more and we look forward to seeing as many as possible join us for what has, in the past, been an enjoyable afternoon for all ages. Hope to see you at Innellan Bowling & Tennis Club on 23 July. MRS JEAN GEORGE It is with sadness that I pass on news of Jean George's passing last week. Jean was a member of IBTC for quite a few years and was a great supporter of the Club. One of the many things we have to thank Jean for was the introduction of the bowls trolleys. Jean kindly donated these to the Club. She was also very involved in Ladies' Day and many of our visiting bowlers will remember, with kindness, the hand made gifts Jean would present to all ladies attending Innellan's Ladies Day. Our condolences go to Jean's family. There will be no church service at this side of the water but for anyone wishing to attend the service, it will be held at the Crematorium in Greenock on Saturday 2 July at 11am. Myra Campbell INNELLAN BOWLING GREEN - HOW LUCKY ARE WE? I had the pleasure of marking a tie on the Green on Wednesday 25th May. I asked myself, how lucky are we? I think we have a little piece of heaven right here at Innellan Bowling & Tennis Club. Make the most of it folks because it is beautiful - see more pictures in the Gallery. Myra We are pleased to begin the new
season with a new sign board at the entrance to the Club INNELLAN BOWLING &
TENNIS CLUB The Green & Courts at Innellan Bowling & Tennis Club officially opened for the 2016 Season on Saturday 9th April. President David Morrison welcomed members and visitors and said that it was only 3 years since he & Jean had moved to the area and had taken a walk through the gates "just to watch some bowls". He didnt know about us though and before he knew it he said Princess Lea (Myra), Chewbacca (Curly) & Yoda (Archie) had them signed up for membership, Committee & now standing here today as President. He said they have thoroughly enjoyed it ever since and he was honoured to be standing here as President today. He then thanked Past President Curly Black and thanked him for all his work over the past 3 years. He introduced Scott Richmond from Kirn & Hunters Quay BC to speak on behalf of the kindred Clubs. Scott thanked David for asking him to speak today and said that this was his first shot at this. He said he always enjoyed coming to Innellan for League matches or Open Tournaments and complimented Derek on the condition of the Green. He wished the Club a successful season and said he looked forward to playing here soon. David then introduced the rest of the top table, namely, Myra Campbell (Secretary), Meg Henry (Tennis Convenor), Garreth Garrett (Vice President) and his wife Jean (Bar Convenor). He said he would like to thank everyone who had helped in any way to have the Club ready for today, in particular Jacky McLay, Barry Chapman & Jean. He also thanked the Tennis workers including Robin Henry & Joe Rhodes (non-members of the Club). He also gave thanks to local contractors Mark Elliott & Derek Rose for all the time they gave to the Club. David then asked his wife Jean to do the honours of opening the Green and she very ably delivered the first bowls of the season, with the second one very nearly reaching the long jack. With the weather being so good, a Wappenschaw & short game of tennis followed. Curly Black had the first toucher of the season (starting as he means to continue), and the winning triple after a close photo finish was John Stewart, Tommy McDonagh & Nigel Potts. They all received Easter Eggs - no drink . A very substantial afternoon tea followed by a gigantic raffle finished off the formal part of the afternoon. David thanked everyone for coming along to celebrate Innellans Opening Day, the ladies in the kitchen, Jean in the bar and everyone for bringing along raffle prizes. Id like to thank Carrie for all her help in the kitchen too, I wouldnt have managed without her. The serious part of the day then continued with members & friends wetting the Clubs head and when I left the singing was just about to start. Bowling and tennis resumes! Myra Campbell PREPARATIONS FOR OPENING DAY
Opening Day is almost upon us and some members have been helping out at the Club over the past couple of weeks. Some, like David & Jean Morrison, Barry Chapman and Jacky McLay have been camping out I think! Others have been very good with giving a few hours here and there (too many to mention) and every little bit of help is appreciated. Meg, Anne, Joe, Ernie and Liz have been busy on the Courts too. [See more photos in the Gallery] If you do have a few hours please pop along or give President David a wee ring on 07443 000382 and he'll be pleased to let you know what's left to do. Please get in touch if you have a spare hour or two. OPENING DAY 2016 Our official Opening Day for the 2016 Season for both Bowling and Tennis will be Saturday 9th April. The opening time is 1.30 for 2pm. We will have the Opening Ceremony followed by a game of Bowls / Tennis, (weather permitting) followed by afternoon tea. Home baking and/or raffle prizes would be appreciated. A Happy New Year to all members of Innellan Bowling and Tennis Club. The Management Committee elected at the AGM in November held its first meeting on 25th January when a date was set for the first Bowling Meeting of the year. This is normally held nearer to Opening Day in April but Cowal Bowling Association have raised issues about possible changes to the Gent's Hyslop League. Consequently we need to discuss this matter so that we can present our Club's view to the next Cowal Bowling Association meeting. Our meeting will therefore be in the Clubhouse on Sunday 7 February at 2 pm when it is hoped as many as possible will attend. This meeting will also afford members the opportunity to air their views on the format and organisation of club competitions etc and offer their services as selectors, match secretaries, competition convenors. |
