News and Events INNELLAN GREEN CLOSES FOR THE SEASON
Following a full on season as Host Club for Cowal, Innellan Bowling & Tennis Club closed its green on Saturday 27th September, although the tennis section will continue at present. With a fantastic turnout of 36 members taking part in a balloted Mixed Triples for the McLaren Rosebowl & some friends joining in later on for the Fish Tea, a great afternoon/evening was had by all (some more than others). A spider for the bottle donated by Isabel McGillivray was won by Vanda Brown. On completion of the games, prior to the fish teas arriving, President Curly announced the highest & lowest triples. The booby was awarded to Eileen Brand; Garreth Garrett & David Morrison (Skip) and the highest scoring triple of the day, who took the Rosebowl for 2014, was Lynn Lauffer; Dougie Black & Craig McDonagh (Skip). A huge thanks to Anselmo's for delivering the piping hot "Fish Suppers" right on time. The Clubhouse had that lovely aroma of hot vinegary fish & chips emanating from it and etiquette went "oot the windae" as everyone ate them out the papers!! Nothing quite like it!! The Committee would like to thank all the members, sponsors, friends & kindred clubs for making it a fantastic season for the Club. Thank you one and all! DONNIE GALBRAITH MEMORIAL SHIELD
Colintraive BC hosted the annual Donnie Galbraith Memorial Mixed Triples v- Innellan on Sunday 28th September. This tournament has been ongoing from the late 90's and is in memory of Donnie who was a stalwart member of Innellan Bowling & Tennis Club and a great friend of Colintraive. Nan & Jim Cook kindly sponsored the event again this year and members of both Clubs thank them for this. Unfortunately, Nan has been unable to bowl this year and has been sorely missed on the Cowal Greens but she is not ruling out returning next season. She has continued to visit all the Clubs in the area and helps out whenever she can. She can be booked for dog walking in the meantime! A lovely lunch was served by Louisa, Jan & June of Colintraive BC and following completion of the games the company sat down to a two course meal provided by Fergie & Co. It was lovely to see Moyra Donald & Katie Hughes too. Moyra joined us for lunch and Katie popped along to see her Innellan friends (& to have a wee white wine or two) I'm sure it was just to see us though! The
winners & losers from each Club were:- Innellan Winners Myra Campbell; Tommy McDonagh & Ian McGrouther (Skip). Booby Prizes - Dougie Black; Alex McDonagh & Dorothy McGrouther (Skip). Colintraive won overall with the highest shots & points and the Trophy therefore remains with them until next Season when hopefully it will come to Innellan for a wee visit. Innellan did win more raffle prizes though and Alex McDonagh's wee face was a picture when most of her table had won and she hadn't that was until the star prize was drawn and out came her lucky ticket. One happy lady star prize & booby all in one day! Congratulations to David Gray who was celebrating his Big 7 ? Thank you to everyone at Colintraive BC for another wonderful day. We look forward to returning for Ladies Day on 5th October. BUSY WEEKEND FOR INNELLAN BOWLERS Friday 19th September 11 bowlers from Innellan attended Upper Cowal's invitation 4/3/2/1/1 on Friday evening. The games started at 6pm prompt and with it being a lovely evening, the 12 ends of bowling fitted in nicely before darkness fell. Upper Cowal did invite us under false pretences though as they said it was a friendly game!!! Not so friendly were the results. Helen & Evelyn provided a lovely supper and all those who took part thoroughly enjoyed their evening. A great idea by Upper Cowal to keep the Clubs together during September when most bowling ties had been completed. Saturday 20th September Finals Day Finals Day was held in bright sunshine. Ladies & Mixed Pairs were played in the morning with Dorothy (Dot) & Ian McGrouther having a very close games against Alex & Craig McDonagh. Dot & Ian won by 2 shots. Lorna Reid & Vanda Brown took on Lynne Lauffer & Myra Campbell and both sides had a very enjoyable game. Lorna was on her usual form and Vanda skipped her first final ever (having only taken up bowls a few months ago). Lynne & Myra managed to take the trophy for 2014 although by no means was it a one sided game. Ladies' & Gents' Championships were held in the afternoon with Curly Black taking on Craig McDonagh. A very close game ensued with Curly just taking the lead in the final stages to become the Club Champion for 2014. Lilian McDonald & Alex McDonagh fought hard for the Ladies Salver and following being peels at 13, Lilian went on to take the crown. New names on both trophies this year. The Sykes Trophy (Ladies' Singles) was played between Myra Campbell & Dot McGrouther on a very tricky Rink 4 (both ladies agreed to this). The game was close until each player scoring 1 shot an end until Dot took off on a roll & left Myra behind. Well done to all the winners & runners up. A
lovely afternoon with many spectators enjoying the games,
lunch, afternoon tea and a few refreshments. Sunday 21st September Seven Innellan members joined Colintraive BC for a friendly v- Tarbert BC. Really just an excuse for a lovely wee day out in the (dare I say it again) brilliant sunshine! Tarbert made us all very welcome and another good afternoon's bowling took place. President Curly Black of Colintraive presented the trophy to Tarbert for a second year with the promise that it would be going 'overseas' next season. Prizes were given to the highest up triple from each Club with the Colintraive-Innellan winning triple being Louisa Black, Jean Morrison & Curly Black. INNELLAN
BOWLING & TENNIS CLUB'S LADIES' TRIPLES
IBTC's annual Ladies' Day was held on Sunday 07 September with 30 ladies from Rothesay, Colintraive, Kirn & Hunters Quay, Dunoon Argyll, Bogleha and the host Club taking part. Innellan had 11 ladies this year which must be quite a record. The weather was perfect with the sun shining all day! Huge thanks to Jake & Helena McLay from McLay Glass who sponsor this tournament year after year. The format for the day was two sections of five teams playing four games. The two section winners following some very close games and some we would rather not remember were:- Marie Dominick (Dunoon Argyll); Jan Robertson (Kirn & HQ) Alex McDonagh (Innellan) and Kate Graham (Dunoon Argyll), Vanda Brown (Innellan) June McIver (Colntraive) with the runners up being Anna McDonagh (unattached), Ann McDonald (Bogleha) May Watt (Dunoon Argyll) and Lorna Reid (Innellan), Susan Selkirk (Rothesay) Alison Strachan (Dunoon Argyll). Following the semi's the two finalists were Alison Strachan's & June McIver's triples. The final was played in brilliant sunshine with the other bowlers sitting outside to enjoy the game. Alison's triple took an early lead with Lorna playing some perfect bowls and being backed up by Susan & Alison. After four ends of bowling they were five shots up on Junes triple. An excellent end of bowls gave Kate, Vanda & June two shots in the 5th leaving them lying three down going into the last end. This was when the excitement really began with Kate & Vanda delivering perfect drawing shots to leave them lying three shots before the skips delivered their bowls. To the spectators it looked like Alison just had to draw in to cut down the score but as we all know, when the pressure is on, it's not that easy. Alison's first bowl was just wide of the mark, June's bowl was short but lay in a good place, Alison's second bowl drew up a little short and June's bowl moved one of her team's bowls a little closer, taking it into the count. The last two bowls delivered by the skips didn't alter the head and the team taking the trophy for 2014 were Kate, Vanda & June. Congratulations to them and a huge well done to Lorna, Susan & Alison who had played so well all day. A special mention must go to the novice bowlers who took part this year. These being Jan Robertson, Audrey Disnard & Caroline McGuigan from Kirn & HQ (the terrible threesome) and our very own Vanda Brown. Well done ladies! Thanks to all the ladies who entered the day, the ladies who provided the lunch, Andrew for the meal, Archie for the board, the men for looking after us (with a smile), to Curly for the bar, everyone for raffle prizes and Derek for the green. A wee mention also to The Pot Shot for the lovely Dunoon mugs for the winners & runners up! Well done to Isabel McGillivray who won the Spider and kindly donated the bottle back to the Club for another spider on Closing Day. June McIver, winning skip thanked her team and reiterated Curlys thanks to everyone. GENTS' PAIRS on INNELLAN GREEN SPONSORED BY TYRE & SON Tennis Section SENIOR TENNIS SECTION
JUNIOR TENNIS SECTION
SENIOR COMPETITIONS 2014 For the first time in some years all Club competitions were contested this year the last time the Mixed Doubles was contested was 2006 and the Gents Doubles 2000. So this resurgence of interest was welcome and hopefully will continue next year. The Drummond Shield which is a joint bowls and tennis competition where ideally a bowler partnered by a tennis player play both bowls and tennis to compete for the trophy. Unfortunately bowlers, possibly doubting their mobility, skill and stamina on the tennis court, tend to be backwards in coming forward for this competition. Again there was increased interest from the bowlers this year and hopefully this too will continue next year. Our annual Mixed Doubles Tournament is always well supported by our friends at Castle Tennis Club in Dunoon and this year was no exception. The winners were Lynn McFarlane and David McDermott (Sen). DRUMMOND TROPHY WINNERS
Our very own Meg Henry with a very young Matthew Brown winners of the Drummond Trophy in 2008. Meg's tuition obviously paid off as Matthew has just won the Drummond Trophy again in 2014 and to cap a very successful season has been awarded the "Player of the Year" for 2014. This award was not only for his tennis skills but also for all the help he has given Meg with the Juniors through the season. Matthew is also a junior bowler and represents the Club in Bowls Scotland; Argyll & Bute & Cowal ties as well as being a member of our League Team. 2014 News ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The
Club held its AGM on Sunday 16 November at 2pm in the
Clubhouse. This was attended by 25 members and
THE FIRST MEETING OF THE NEW COMMITTEE OF MANAGEMENT WILL BE HELD ON MONDAY 24 NOVEMBER 2014 at 7.30pm in THE VILLAGERS ROYAL, INNELLAN The Bowling Green closed for the season on Saturday 27th September and will re open in April 2015. Meanwhile the tennis courts remain available for play for the next few weeks. REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICE
The Club would like to thank our member Jacky McLay, for attending at the Innellan Village War Memorial on Sunday 9th. November to lay the poppy wreath on behalf of Innellan Bowling & Tennis Club. Jacky was honoured to carry out this task on behalf of the Club and we would like to thank him. INNELLAN BOWLING & TENNIS CLUB PRESENTATION OF PRIZES 38 members sat down to dinner with a few more joining later for the presentation of prizes held on Saturday 1st November in the clubhouse of Dunoon Argyll BC. Following a splendid three course meal, President Curly Black & Secretary Myra Campbell presented the prizes, ably assisted by Meg Henry of the Tennis Section. It was definitely a year for the new members, with Lilian MacDonald lifting the Ladies Champion Trophy and Craig McDonagh lifting 3 trophies, including Player of the Year. There were also big surprises in the Tennis Section with Meg Henry NOT lifting a winners trophy for the first time in over 40 years (Wow!!). What an achievement though and Meg is no doubt delighted not to have to polish any trophies this winter, although shell surely be back with the winners next year. With the majority of our members being seniors it was lovely to have 4 of our younger members lifting trophies this year. Stuart Adams lifted the Tennis Singles Trophy with his brother Conor also being amongst the prizewinners, lifting the Gents Doubles with Matthew Brown. Matthew lifted no less than 4 trophies, including Player of the Year for the Tennis Section which was awarded, not only for his tennis skills, but for all the assistance he has given with the Juniors throughout the season. The Esprit de Corps Cup donated by Jake McLay was awarded to David Morrison for the tremendous amount of work he does fundraising for the club and to ensure that the Gala Day is such a success. This Cup, in its second year, is a special thank you to a member who goes that extra mile (or quite a few extra miles in the case of David, as he treks round the town for donations). Following the prizegiving, President Curly Black gave a vote of thanks to Dunoon Argyll BC for the use of their clubhouse; Donna, Joanna & Mary, our excellent waitresses; Bill & Donald behind the bar and to the members who had supported the Club throughout the year. Then it was time to boogie the night away to the music provided by DJ Robert MacGregor. Thanks to everyone for making it such a good night. GALA DAY 2014 Following on from the success of our Gala Day last year we had high hopes that all the hard work and planning for this year would result in an even better day. Sadly we have no control over the weather but despite what turned out to be soggy afternoon we managed to raise ?1000 approximately. Having had days of glorious weather in the lead up to Gala Day things reverted to form and within an hour of Mr Gordon Ross, Managing Director, Western Ferries declaring the Gala Day open the heavens had given an indication of what was in store. It was not long before it became evident that the rain was on for the day. A combination of the poor weather and competing attractions such as the Commonwealth Games meant we had fewer folk through the gates than we would have perhaps wished. Nonetheless those who did turn up enjoyed themselves as best they could before the rain eventually brought things to a halt and there was always the shelter of the marquee housing various stalls and the tea room which was very well patronised. One gentleman defied the elements to successfully Wang a Wellie an outrageous distance and lift the prize. Our grateful thanks go to all who came along to support this event, Mr Gordon Ross of Western Ferries for performing the opening, the highland dancers who performed admirably on a rather wet surface, all our sponsors and contributors and all who helped in some way to get the show on the road. We look forward to seeing you all again next year. QUIZ NIGHT AT INNELLAN BTC As part of the Dunoon Tournament entertainment, Innellan Bowling & Tennis Club hosted a Quiz Night on Monday 28 July. 40 members & friends turned up and a fun night was had by all. Heres
just a few of the answers on the night:- Thanks to Fraser Brown for pointing out that the first goal of the 2014 Football World Cup was an own goal! (this really put the cat amongst the pigeons)! Following a supper of home baking and plenty of refreshments, the raffle was held and special thanks to the teams from Kirn & Bogleha for bringing along prizes. Thanks for buying the tablet (proceeds to McMillan Nurses). Following careful scrutiny by Curly the eventual winners were:- 2nd place "Nearly New Kids on the Block" (Dot & Ian McGrouther & Jean & David Morrison)
Thanks everyone & heres to next time. INNELLAN BOWLERS SUCCESS The
Cowal Section Finals of the Argyll & Bute
Championships were held on Innellan Green on Wednesday
9th July. INNELLAN SENIOR FOURS - HOT SHOTS Just before play got underway at the Mixed Triples on 24th June, Secretary Myra Campbell asked for a few minutes to make a special presentation to four of Innellans Senior male members, these being Ian McGrouther, Curly Black, Douglas Lauffer & Archie Tait, who scored a maximum "8" in the first end of their first game in the Bowls Scotland Senior 4s on May 21st at Hillend Green BC. Myra presented each of them with a "Hot Shots Certificate", medal & bowls stickers. Well done boys, you are now members of the Bowls International Hot Shots Club.
AWARD OF HONORARY MEMBERSHIP HARRY MATHIESON At
the opening of the Green on 12th April, President Curly
Black announced that the Club had agreed to award
Honorary Membership to two longstanding members - Mrs
Isabel McGillivray and Mr Harry Mathieson. Unfortunately,
due to ill health, Harry could not be present on the day
to accept his Certificate of Honorary Membership. BOWLS SCOTLAND Congratulations to Alex McDonagh, Dorothy McGrouther & Myra Campbell (Skip) for reaching the District Finals of the Bowls Scotland Ladies' Triples on Sunday 15 June at Upper Cowal BC. Unfortunately, they will not be needing to purchase white hats for Ayr this year, but well done girls on getting this far. They are the proud recipients of Bowls Scotland Runners Up Medals and will wear them with pride. A great experience! OPENING DAY The bowling green and tennis courts opened for the season on Saturday 12 April. A cold blustery afternoon did not deter a large number of friends and members turning up to hear President John (Curly) Black welcome everyone and thanked those who had contributed so much during the close season to get the clubhouses and grounds prepared for opening day. He also announced that the Club had awarded Honorary Membership to Mrs Isabel McGillivray and Mr Harry Mathieson in recognition of their long and loyal service and support of the Club. Unfortunately Mr Mathieson was unable to attend but President Black then presented Mrs McGillivray with her Certificate of Honorary Membership. Mrs June McIver (Colintraive BC) spoke of the history of Innellan Bowling & Tennis Club and the special bond with Colintraive Bowling Club the oldest and youngest clubs. Mr John Gilchrist (Rothesay BC) spoke on behalf of kindred clubs and recognised the warm welcome and hospitality of Innellan members which he and others had enjoyed over the years when visiting Innellan. Mrs McIver then put up the first Jack and opening bowls to declare the green open. While the tennis members braved the cold and blustery wind to enjoy a few games on the well prepared courts, thirty bowlers took to the green for a wappenschaw which was won by Lynn Lauffer and Sandy Jackson (innellan BC) and Stewart McInnes (Kirn &HQ BC) and recived a special IBTC Easter Egg each Bill Thom (innellan BC) had the first toucher of the day. Winner of the Spider was David McLennan (innellan BC) who received a bottle of House of Commons whisky. The day concluded with a sumptuous tea and the raffle following which President Curly Black thanked all who had contributed to this very enjoyable and successful occasion and looked forward to seeing them again throughout the coming season. CUPID VISITS INNELLAN BOWLING & TENNIS CLUB The Clubhouse of IBTC was transformed into a room of L U V on Friday 14 February to celebrate St Valentines Day courtesy of Cromlech Events and our committee members. 40 members and friends attended to partake of a Valentines Dinner provided by David & Jean Morrison. A collage of Valentines rhymes and photos of current members in much younger days was the focus of much attention. David Gray, resplendent in his dinner suit, welcomed the guests as they arrived and showed them to their tables. where they were served a complimentary glass of wine, as they chatted until dinner was served. Following the delicious 3 course dinner, home made sweets were served which werent really needed (but then again when does chocolate not go down well?). Each lady was also presented with a single rose and the lucky complimentary raffle winner was Matthew Brown. Two of our more senior members entered into the spirit of things by participating in a Mr & Mrs Q & A session compered by Myra Campbell. Despite some interesting discrepancies, and some confusion on one or two issues the overall conclusion was that they knew each other reasonably well. Myra then presented them with a little paperweight as a token of thanks for taking part and they were given a round of applause from the company. Our thanks also to Cromlech Events for making the room look so LUVely!, Kents the Butchers, Morrisons Supermarket, Innellan Village Hall, Jean & David (for everything really) Dot & Ian McGrouther & Eileen Brand for being waiters on the night, Curly Black for running the bar & keeping everyone in order, David Gray, & Myra, and to everyone who helped in any way to make this a special evening for the members of the Club. Last but not least to all those members who turned up (with their hangovers) to tackle the clean-up operation on Saturday morning. What they say about 'many hands make light work' is certainly true and in a couple of hours, everything was back to normal. The evening was a resounding success and were just waiting to hear David & Jeans next plans. Maybe a Garden Party or a Banquet who knows, but watch this space!!
