Championship : I. McGrouther News and Events OPENING DAY On Opening Day, twenty four bowlers took to the green which like most others has suffered from the poor weather over the winter and the bitterly cold winds of recent weeks but our green keeper Derek Logue had worked wonders to get the green fit enough for a few ends to be played. Against a backdrop of the last remnants of the recent snow on the surrounding hills and NATO naval ships on the river the gallant twenty four braved the cold and buffeting wind to complete six ends of bowls. The winning triple comprising Bill Thom (Innellan) Louisa Black (Colintraive) and Willie Wilson (Bogleha) were rewarded with a bottle of wine each for their efforts. Harry Matheson (Innellan) was also the winner of a bottle of wine having achieved the first toucher of the season. WAPPENSCHAWS INNELLAN GREEN CLOSES FOR
THE SEASON 27 members took part and enjoyed their last outdoor game till spring. Following the game the members partook of fish teas, supplied once again by Alan at Anselmos. The Club would like to thank Alan for his support through the season and to say that the suppers were to his usual very high standard. A big thank you too to Andy Gillies of the Toward Sailing Club who delivered the suppers on his way to Toward with their supply of goodies. This was followed by home baking washed down with plenty of refreshments. The winning triple on the day and the recipients of the McLaren Rosebowl for 2013 were Jean Morrison, Bill Thom & Barry Chapman (Skip) (picture in the Gallery) with the runners up being Eileen Brand & Nigel Potts (Skip). Well done to them & to everyone who took part. Isabel MacGillivray presented the trophy to the winners and President Curly thanked everyone for coming along to enjoy Closing Day. He thanked the members for their support through the season and his Committee for their support too. He then wished everyone a safe journey home but there was no hurry for that hic hic!! Myra Secretary 2013 LADIES DAY at INNELLAN SPONSORED BY MCLAY GLASS & GLAZING Innellan Bowling & Tennis Club held its annual Ladies Day on Sunday 8th. September sponsored once again by McLay Glass & Glazing. The ladies who travelled from Rothesay, Colintraive & local Cowal Clubs found themselves playing in good conditions with the weather being favourable for bowls. A bit windy, one shower early afternoon and sunshine for the final, what more could we ask for! Even the midges stayed away ? The two section winning triples were:- Joyce Holgate (Bogleha); Nan Cook (Colintraive) & Dorothy McGrouther (Skip) (Innellan); Isabel MacGillivray (Innellan); Mavis Knowles (Rothesay) & Elizabeth Smith (Skip) (Dunoon Argyll) with the runners up from each section being:- Ann McDonald (Bogleha); Sam Potts (Innellan) & June MacIver (Skip) (Colintraive & June Williams (Rothesay); Jean Robinson (Dunoon Argyll) & Myra Campbell (Skip) Innellan). Elizabeths triple won through to the final following a close game against Junes triple while Dorothys triple lost out to Myras triple who took an early lead & managed to take the game after 6 ends played. The final was cut to 6 ends and was close to start with. Both skips went off the boil in one end with each playing 3 short bowls. Luckily they did pick up and didnt leave all the work to their leads & seconds. Myras triple managed to keep the lead and June, Jean and myself picked up the trophy for 2013. Congratulations to them/us & to Isabel, Mavis & Elizabeth as the very worthy runners up. (Pictures in the Gallery) A huge thanks to all the ladies who took part and to Fergie for catering, to Archie for his format, to Curly for the bar & to Davy, David, Ian, Archie & Curly for looking after the ladies all day. Nothing was too much bother for them. Thanks also to Jean George for the lovely hand made cards she gifted to each lady, to everyone for raffle prizes and to Derek for having the green in tip top condition. And last but definitely not least to Jake & Helena McLay for their continued sponsorship of this tournament. Thank you from IBTC. Vice President Eileen presented the prizes and wished everyone a safe journey home. Innellan Green will close on Saturday 28 September with an Internal Mixed Triples followed by fish suppers! Get your names in please! Myra Secretary 2013 SUNSHINE ON INNELLAN GREEN FOR TYRE & SONS GENTS PAIRS TOURNAMENT In the best spell of weather for a long time 24 pairs from Cowal Clubs & Gourock Park entered this popular tournament on Sunday 14th July on Innellan Green. The Club is in a perfect setting when its sunny and this helped to make the day more enjoyable. IBTC would like to say a huge thanks once again to John Tyre & Son who continue the sponsorship of this tournament and to Terry Pearce who presented the prizes on their behalf. A Spider was held, with the proceeds being donated to Cancer Research. Ian McGrouther won the bottle donated by Dougie Lauffer. Thanks go to Phyllis & her band of ladies in the kitchen and Lynn in the bar for food and refreshments on such a hot day also to our Greenkeeper, Derek, who has put in a lot of work to get our green as it is now. The highest scoring team from each section qualified to the semis. Semi finalists were Boglehas John Campbell & Tommy McDonagh v - Kirn & HQs Eddie Wallace & Jim Wallace (Snr) - a closely fought game with Eddie & Jim winning 5 shots to 3 and Upper Cowals Stevie Scott & Boglehas Stewart McInnes v- Kirn & HQs Callum Goffin & Jim Wallace (Jnr) - Stevie & Stewart took the lead early on and qualified to the final with a score of 6 shots to 1. The final was very closely contested with no more than 1 shot between the teams at any point of the game. The last end began with Steven and Stuart with a 1 shot lead, until Jim ditched the jack and stayed with it, making it peels. Eddie then drew a second shot giving them game. Stevie was unable to draw through the front bowls to force an extra end and the winners for 2013 were father and son Eddie & Jim Wallace. Well done to them and to the very worthy runners up Stevie & Stewart. (Photo in photo gallery). WELL DONE TO OUR SENIOR 4'S FISH & CHIP FRIENDLY Innellan Bowling & Tennis Club hosted its sixth annual Fish & Chip Friendly on Saturday 8th June. 46 bowlers from the oldest (159 yrs) and the youngest (19 yrs) clubs in Cowal met on Innellan Green in brilliant sunshine to enjoy a day with friends. Our grateful thanks go once again to Alan and staff at Anselmos Fish Bar as the highlight of the day is the anticipation of being served a piping hot supper of your choice, followed by some superb baking by the ladies of both Clubs. (We still dont know how Alan does it as the suppers really are piping hot when they arrive!). The format for the day was 3 games of 6 ends with the highest scoring team from each club receiving a little prize for their efforts. The top Innellan team was Lorna Reid, Matthew Brown, Lillian McDonald & Ernie Sykes (skip). Colintraive had to make it a bit more difficult to determine their winning team with two teams having the same points, shots & winning ends. This resulted in both skips playing one end of bowls to decide the overall winner. Tommy McDonagh & Roddy McDonald, skips, took to the green to play their deciding shots, with Roddy winning to ensure himself and teammates, Louisa Black & June McIver took the prize. Moyra Donald of Colintraive presented the prizes to both teams and the Silver Salver to Innellan BC as the top scoring Club on the day. (Photos in photo gallery). June McIver, Colintraive, spoke on behalf of her members as it was Colintraives year for hosting this event. She thanked everyone for making it another day to remember. Following the raffle everyone congregated on the green to have the annual picture taken and we may moan about our British weather but over the six years this tournament has been going we have only had one bad day. We cant really complain. It was lovely to see Barbara back bowling again (sorry about the long jacks) and Moyra, although not bowling, enjoying her day. All thats left to say is that we are already looking forward to next year when we meet up again to defend our Fish & Chip Trophy. Haste ye Back! NEIL McCORMICK TROPHY GEORGE CAMERON MEMORIAL
TROPHY BAGPACKING A huge thanks to all members (& friends) for helping on Bagpacking Day on Friday 20 September in Morrisons. The grand sum of ?833.10 was raised and this was fantastic! PRESENTATION DANCE - SATURDAY 2nd NOVEMBER The annual presentation dance will be held in Dunoon Argyll BC, Bowling Clubhouse (Mary Street) and the cost will be confirmed nearer the time. The cost of the caterer and price of the band (Acoustic Soundz) have still to be confirmed. The Committee look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible. It was a great night last year and we can make it an even better one this year. A sheet will be put on the board in the Clubhouse this Sunday but if members want to email the Secretary with numbers they may do so. GALA DAY - 27 July The Gala Day was a great success and our thanks must go to our Sub Committee who had done all the running about to ensure everything was in place. Thanks also to each and every member who helped on the day. The home baking stall was wonderful and if anything we had too much (if that's possible). The tea room was a bit slow to start but it soon filled up and went like a fair all afternoon. The bouncy castle & the games were a great atttraction for the kiddies and the BBQ Venison Burgers seemed to go down a treat with all ages. The Highland Dancers (Hannah & Laura) were wonderful to watch and we must thank them for giving up their time to come along. Thanks also to the stall holders. The marquee made all the difference and had it been a wet day it would certainly have been necessary. As it turned out, the weather was wonderful and what a difference it made. Anyway just to say thanks to all and to let you know that the Club made a healthy ?1,350 profit. We would like to thank the following whose donations and support for our Gala Day were much appreciated:
Tennis Section The poor weather of the winter months plus the recent extreme cold had done little for the tennis courts. A considerable amount of work had been done in recent weeks to get them into shape for the opening of the season and tennis players were not about to be denied by the blustery cold conditions prevailing on Opening Day. Nonetheless those who took to the courts had to admit defeat after just a couple of games when the strong blustery wind and bitter cold proved just too much. Like their bowling counterparts there was no shame in retreating to the warmth and refreshments in the Clubhouse. The tennis section has a slightly longer season than the bowlers, running from opening day in April until October, or sometimes November each year, depending on the weather. There are two red blaes tennis courts (as used in the French Open). We ask that all players should wear flat-soled shoes as the surface can easily be damaged by shoes with a rough tread. New members, both senior and junior are always welcome as are visitors. Free coaching is available. Club sessions take place on Wednesday evenings from 7pm and Saturday afternoons from 3pm. Members can make their own arrangements to play at any other times. There is an annual mixed doubles tournament which is open to anyone in the community as well as members of other clubs. This is usually a popular event due to the substantial afternoon tea provided by members. The club championships run throughout the season and culminate in a prize-giving shared with the bowling section in November. The junior section is open to all children from age 8 and above. Junior members may arrange to play at any time and there is also a dedicated Junior night every Monday (weather permitting). There are two groups: those at primary school come from 5 - 6.30pm and those at secondary school from 6.30 until 8pm. Free coaching is provided and a tuck shop is run on Monday nights. The junior championships are hotly contested and held at the end of the season. Children of primary school age are entitled to free membership if they have a parent who is a member of the club. Tennis for juniors commences on Monday evening 29 April 2013 when coaching will be available - primary school age group (8+) from 5 - 6.30pm and secondary school age group from 6.30 - 8 pm . New junior members are welcome. Why not come along and give it a try - no need to have all the equipment at this stage, we provide all the equipment you will need to get started you just need to bring flat soled shoes. There is also a tuck shop on Monday evenings. See the Gallery for photos of Junior members On the 9th June 2013, players from the Castle Tennis Club and Innellan Club played the annual tennis tournament under clear blue skies and a hot sun. There can be no better venue than Innellan tennis courts, overlooking the wide expanse of the Firth of Clyde, on such a glorious day. Each player enjoyed four rounds of tennis, partners being picked from the hat. In the grand final, Meg Henry and Craig Torlay beat Helen Waddell and Kyle Blincow. A great afternoon, fuelled with home baking and teas, was had by all. Photos are in the Gallery
